Logo and brand identity design for Zempléni Építő és Gépészeti Kft.

Zempléni Építő és Gépészeti Kft. and the goal of the project

ZÉG is a company based in Sátoraljaújhely specializing in construction, mechanical engineering, and building materials retail. Our goal was to develop a visual identity that communicates professionalism, reliability, and a modern approach while remaining distinctive, recognizable, and suitable for long-term use.

When designing the identity of a building materials retailer, it is particularly important to ensure that the brand does not get lost among the similar color palettes and typographic solutions commonly used within the industry. For ZÉG, we therefore aimed to create more than a simple decorative logo, developing a distinctive visual identity that could serve as a recognizable brand asset in its own right.

In addition to the logo, we designed several key elements of the brand identity, including the visual system for the business card and a range of applications demonstrating how the new identity could work across everyday communications and physical touchpoints.

Distinctive form, easy recognition, and a strong brand mark

One of our primary objectives during the logo design process was to turn the ZÉG name itself into a strong visual identifier. Rather than placing a generic construction-related symbol – such as a house, brick, roof, or building element – at the center of the logo, we built the design around the character of the brand name. By carefully developing the letterforms, we created a custom wordmark that is bold, modern, and easy to remember.

ZÉG’s distinctive character comes from its strong geometric forms, consistent lines, and custom typographic details. The unconventional elements incorporated into the logo distinguish the brand from traditional visual identities in the building materials sector while maintaining the sense of professionalism and stability expected of a construction company. Our goal was to create a logo that could be recognized at a glance and retain its distinctive character across different sizes, digital platforms, and printed materials.

A thoughtful color palette and consistent visual system

A defining element of ZÉG’s visual identity is its deep, distinctive blue, which provides a strong foundation for professional and reliable brand communication. Rather than using the blue in isolation, we paired it with clean, light backgrounds and a subtle complementary gray. This combination allows the identity to feel both confident and refined while working effectively across business communications and marketing materials.

Another important consideration when developing the color system was its adaptability across different communication channels. A well-designed brand identity extends far beyond the logo: the same visual principles need to work consistently across business cards, digital graphics, signage, packaging, and social media content.

Business card – the brand identity in a professional setting

When designing the business card, we focused on creating a clear information hierarchy while preserving the visual character of the brand. The name, position, phone number, address, email address, and website are presented within a clearly structured, easy-to-read layout. The icons and typography share a consistent visual language with the logo, while the larger ZÉG brand mark on the reverse functions as a graphic element in its own right.

Our aim was to ensure that the business card would serve not only as a practical source of contact information but also as one of the first tangible touchpoints with the ZÉG brand.

Applying the brand identity in physical environments

For a building materials retailer, it is particularly important that the brand identity works effectively beyond digital platforms. In everyday use, the brand may appear across a wide range of physical applications, including workwear, company vehicles, signage, packaging, printed materials, and promotional items.

As part of the identity design process, we therefore explored applications that demonstrate how ZÉG’s visual identity can function in real-world environments. The logo displayed on a paper bag, for example, illustrates how a simple, single-color brand mark can create a strong visual presence on its own. There is no need to overload every surface with graphics: with appropriate use of space and contrast, a well-designed logo can communicate the brand effectively in its own right.

From logo design to a complete brand identity

Our goal throughout the project was not simply to deliver a logo that looks good in isolation. We wanted to create a visual foundation on which ZÉG could build its future communications consistently. The logo, color palette, typography, icons, layout principles, and various graphic applications work together as a cohesive system. This allows the identity to expand across new communication materials in the future without diluting the brand’s visual character.

At the same time, we deliberately avoided overly conventional visual solutions associated with the construction industry. We wanted to give ZÉG a character of its own rather than create another logo that simply looks recognizably “construction-related.”

This approach closely reflects how Marketing Puzzle works on branding and graphic design projects: creativity is not an end in itself, but a tool that should support recognition, memorability, and effective business communication.

ZÉG’s new visual identity

The completed brand identity provides ZÉG with a distinctive, modern, and versatile visual system. The custom logo is easy to recognize, the consistent color palette reinforces brand recognition, and the clean graphic system allows the identity to remain cohesive across both digital and offline communication channels. The same visual identity was carried through to the company’s construction and building materials retail websites, creating a consistent brand presence across its digital platforms.

For us, one of the key takeaways from the project was once again that an effective brand identity does not depend on the number of graphic elements it contains. A strong identity is recognizable and consistent, and continues to work even when only a few seconds are available to identify the brand. For ZÉG, we achieved this through a distinctive, original, and memorable visual system.
